What Is Debate?

Debate is an academic activity that requires students to research and write a persuasive essay on an argumentative topic. The essays examine both sides of an issue and support the decision to take one side, based on clear writing, effective judgement, and credible information.

The debates are typically synchronous and held in class, but the format can also be asynchronous. The instructor can provide debate topics, a list of resources for each student to study, and can establish the rules of engagement. Students can participate in a debate individually or on teams of two to five. The instructor can also assign debating roles, such as moderator or audience member, or even invite guests to facilitate the debates.

Opening Statement: Grab the audience’s attention by starting with a compelling fact, question, or quotation. State your position quickly so that the judges and audience know where you stand on the issue. Present your arguments in a logical order, beginning with the strongest points. Back each point with well-reasoned evidence and specific examples. Anticipate rebuttals from the opposing team and prepare to counter them.

Summarize your key points and restate your opposition to the motion in a powerful closing statement. Close with a memorable quote or a question that makes the audience think.
